2.3Intercom and door stations

Set up the SIP gateway, door stations, app extensions and ring groups, and what the call does when it rings.

The Veltnova intercom connects a SIP door station to the apps. The gateway runs a SIP proxy (Kamailio) that registers the door station and the app users, and rings every registered app when someone presses the button.

#How a call works

  1. The door station is registered with the gateway as an Intercom Device (extension 901 by default).
  2. When the visitor presses the button, the door station calls a ring group (numbered 9001 by default).
  3. The gateway rings every app user in that group that is currently registered. The first one to answer takes the call. If nobody answers within 30 seconds, the call counts as missed.
  4. The audio goes directly between the door station and the app that answered. The gateway only passes the call signalling.

#1. Enable the SIP Gateway

Open the Server tab, then Internal services > SIP Gateway. Turn Enabled on. The gateway ignores the SIP settings while this switch is off.

Fields:

  • SIP port: default 5060.
  • SIP Accounts, Ring groups and Intercom devices: three buttons, each opening an editor with Add, Clone, Remove, Up and Down.

#2. App users and extensions

Each person who should receive calls needs an extension. These come from Server > Gateway > Users (the first one is created in the project wizard):

  • SIP Extension: type a different number for every user. The wizard suggests 1001 for the first user. A user with no extension does not take part in intercom calls.
  • SIP Password: if left empty, it matches the extension.

These users are automatically available in ring groups. You do not add them again under SIP Accounts, which is only for extra, non-app extensions.

#3. Add the door station

Open Intercom devices and add a device. The Intercom Device Editor has:

FieldPurpose
Device typePick the closest match (2N Elios IP, Generic IP Doorstation, Mobotix M24, TCS, Akuvox, Fanvil, Grandstream GDS, Hikvision, Dahua). It is used as a label.
SIP Username and SIP PasswordThe credentials the door station will register with. Default to 901 and up.
Ring on ClientsWhether the apps play a ringtone. When on, pick the Ringtone: Classic Bell, Ding-Dong Chime, Trill or Soft Chime.
External KNX TriggerOptionally write to KNX when the bell is pressed, for example to switch a light. Choose Write KNX Switch (DPT 1.001) or Write KNX Unsigned Byte (DPT 5), then the group address and value, or a pulse duration (0.1 to 60 seconds).
Open Page on CallMake the app jump to a chosen Panel and Page when it rings, for example the page with the door camera.

#Program the door station

In the door station's own web page, add a SIP account with:

  • Server / proxy: the gateway's IP address, port 5060 (UDP).
  • Username / authentication ID and Password: the SIP Username and SIP Password from the editor.
  • Realm: the gateway's address as it appears in the Configurator's Gateway Address.
  • The call button's destination set to the ring group number (for example 9001).
  • Audio codec G.711 (PCMU or PCMA). The apps decode these two.

#4. Ring groups

In Ring groups, each group has a Label, a Ring Group Number, the SIP Accounts (extensions) that should ring, and a Ringtone. The default number is 9001.

#5. Show it on a page

Add an Intercom object to a page. In its properties:

  • System SIP Gateway: enabled.
  • Intercom device: the door station this object belongs to.
  • Show UI: shows the on-screen answer and close controls.
  • Missed call snapshots: save a picture when a call goes unanswered.
  • Snapshot camera: leave it on Auto to use a Camera object on the same page, or pick one.

The camera is set up as a normal Camera object (type, address, port, credentials and RTSP stream). For cloud or remote viewing the camera stream must be H.264.

#Missed calls

If nobody answers, the gateway waits about 8 seconds and then saves a snapshot from the linked camera. The apps show today's missed-call captures. Turn this off for a device or an Intercom object if you do not want it.

#Door release

This version does not send a door-release command inside the SIP call. Wire the lock to a normal KNX relay and put a Switch or Action Button bound to that group address next to the intercom object. Use the External KNX Trigger only for things that should happen when the bell rings.

#Network notes

  • The door station and the apps must reach the gateway on UDP 5060.
  • The audio is sent directly between the door station and the app on dynamic UDP ports, so they need to be on the same network without client isolation.
  • Turn SIP ALG off on routers between the cloud and the site. It can silently break SIP.
  • Away from the building, the apps use the cloud relay instead of SIP. In that mode there is no background ringing: the app learns about a call only while it is open.

If a phone does not ring, see Troubleshooting.
